Rammed Earth Lamps
This project provides an alternate sustainable building material option to problematic masonry materials. This proposed material is rammed earth and will centre around household lighting objects: a smaller bedside lamp made of a single piece of moulded rammed earth.
This project also explores the concept of place-based making. All of the materials from the clay, sand, wood ash, straw, and lime were gathered from the maker's family farm in Central West, NSW. With simple processes and limited tools needed, this project has the potential to be taken on the road and tested in different communities using different local materials. The quick construction but also destruction of the material lends itself to its use in short-term installation projects.
This project also hopes to expand the possibilities of rammed earth as material beyond its use in creating floors and walls. The closed loop lifecycle is also pivotal to the project's concept allowing for the lamps to be infinitely recycled or easily and sustainably disposed of.
